Phonics is the code that maps the sounds of speech onto letters and letter patterns. English runs roughly 44 sounds through 26 letters and a few hundred spellings — sh, igh, oa, tion. Systematic phonics teaches those correspondences directly and in order, so a reader can sound out a word they have never seen instead of guessing from a picture. It is the most reliable on-ramp from spoken language to the printed page — and the foundation every later reading skill is built on.
