Vocabulary is the inventory of words a reader knows by sight, sound, and meaning. A high-school graduate's working vocabulary should be roughly 25,000 to 50,000 words; the average graduate of the modern American system has substantially less. Vocabulary is built through wide reading, direct instruction in word meanings, and conversation with people whose speech is rich and precise. A contract, a doctor's instructions, a ballot — each requires a vocabulary well above the conversational floor.
