Step 1 — Choose Your Road
Three roads, three honest bars, published up front. A bar you cannot see is not a bar — it is a trick. Start where you are, not where pride says you should be.
Questions, Answered Straight
What is oral reading fluency, and why does it matter for adults?
Oral reading fluency is the ability to read text aloud accurately, at a natural pace, with expression. Reading science shows it is the bridge between decoding words and actually understanding them: when reading aloud is slow and effortful, all of your mental energy goes into sounding out words and none is left over for meaning. Fluency improves only through practice with feedback — which is exactly what the Mirror provides, free, in private, with no one watching.
Does the Reading Mirror record or store my voice?
No. Your voice is handled entirely by your own browser's built-in speech engine, and GSU never receives, stores, sees, or hears any recording. No account is required, and your practice history lives only on your own device. You can practice in complete privacy — which is the whole point. This is a listener that never judges you as a person, only your words per minute.
What is a good Words Correct Per Minute score?
Fluent adult readers typically read aloud at roughly 150–180 words per minute with near-perfect accuracy. The Mirror uses three honest, published bars: GOOD asks 90 WCPM at 92% accuracy, BETTER asks 115 at 95%, and BEST asks 140 at 97%. The bars are shown before you begin, because a bar you cannot see is not a bar — it is a trick.
What happens if I do not pass?
You will be told plainly and respectfully that you did not clear the bar — no participation trophy, because pretending you passed would rob you of the awareness you came here for. Then you get a prescription: your exact stumble words, the Adult Literacy Lab lesson engine for the underlying phonics, and the right Trifurcation Road tier to rebuild on. Miss the bar, get a map. Pupils Before Profits.
Which browsers work?
The Mirror uses your browser's built-in speech recognition, which works best in Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge on desktop and Android, and in Safari on newer iPhones and iPads. If your browser does not support it, this page will say so honestly rather than failing silently — and you can still use Listen mode and practice the passages aloud on your own.
Who built this, and what does it cost?
The Reading Mirror was built by Global Sovereign University, a tuition-free platform operated by The Foundation for Global Instruction, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. It costs nothing, forever — no account, no trial, no upsell. GSU is funded by book sales (every PDF free; Kindle editions $3.99) and voluntary donations. And GENO — a robot you can actually TALK to — is on duty 24/7 right here.
